The organic market in France

Organic food a promising future

Organic products come from organic farming and do not use fertilisers or pesticides. These products must comply with regulations and must be certified and controlled by an approved body.

The most purchased organic products in France are fruits and vegetables, representing 78% of French consumption. French people buy organic food for various reasons such as health and environment. Nowadays junk food is present all over the world and it creates a lot of health problems therefore French people turn to fresher and healthier products. In addition, today people are more oriented towards the environment and because of these two reasons people tend to prefer fresh food and quality good.

Companies that want to enter the organic market have a real opportunity here. In 2017, sales of organic products in France reached 8 billion euros.

About consumption

At least once a month, three-quarters of French people consume organic products and 26% intend to increase this consumption. In terms of production, France has more than five thousand farms involved in organic farming, more than 12,000 processors and 280 importers, 4,700 distributors who share the organic market. Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in the south of France is the biggest organic region in terms of agricultural surface area. It is even more advanced than the other regions of France. This region is strongly helped by the fact that it has very committed consumers who are involved in the organic sector (even more than in the rest of the country).

Types of consumers:

There are several types of consumers who stand out in the organic market: first, regular organic consumers who mainly go to specialised organic shops as they usually have high incomes. There are consumers who are careful about their health and are attracted by local products, which sometimes leads them to consume organic products. Finally, there are the “non-organic consumers” who find organic products too expensive; these consumers are mainly oriented towards hard discount shops.

Consumers habits:

For people who want to eat fresh and organic there are specialised organic shops: Biocoop, La vie Claire, Biomonde, Naturalia, Accord bio, Satoriz, Bio c’Bon, les nouveaux Robinson, Botanic, Marcel&Fils. In addition to that, supermarkets, hypermarkets and even hard discounters such as Aldi and Lidl decided to offer organic products too.

Most French people who regularly consume organic food go to the supermarket to buy all their essential products, with the exception of fruit and vegetables, which are purchased in organic shops. To remedy this consumption habit, hypermarkets and supermarkets are trying to improve their organic fruit and vegetables, and to counter them, organic shops are trying to offer as many organic products as possible, such as jewellery, fashion, bed linen, Alcoholic drinks, cosmetics and household products. These organic shops are trying to create a full-fledged organic supermarket so that customers don’t have to go to non-organic supermarkets to complete their shopping.

The advantages of eating organic

Organic products are not dangerous for your health because there are no chemical products that could be bad for your health. Organic food is picked according to the seasons and, because these products are harvested according to the seasons and because they have not been processed, organic products are considered good quality but expensive. Therefore supermarkets take advantage of this to offer organic food at competitive prices.

Interesting future for the Organic market

It is interesting for companies looking to set up in a booming market to choose the organic market in France, as there are not many big players right now (only 30% of shops are organic shops). The turnover figures speak for themselves; Biocoop, the organic shop has reached a turnover of one million euros. Since the quarantine, the organic market has grown by 8% because French people had to stay at home all day. Consequently, they took the opportunity to start eating fresh food and doing sports. This year, France became the world’s leading organic market side by side with Germany.

  1. Thanks Naile for this article that immediately caught my attention. I must say that the organic market in France is one of the richest markets and is having a huge success from the French people. However, I am of the opinion that it is a bit exaggerated. In the sense that I find it right to eat healthy and balanced but I also find that this market is once again a marketing stunt. In fact, I don't think much that big supermarkets like "Carrefour" sell really "organic" products. Now, I absolutely do not want to say that it is not true, but I believe that if I want to buy a truly "organic" product, I have to buy it either at the farmers or in small retail stores, but certainly not in the big distribution. So, don't you also think that this whole story of the "organic" market is an advertising stunt for large retailers?

  2. Thank you for your comment,
So, the fact is that if you want to buy organic food from farmers it's a consumption habit because most people are happy to find organic food or non organic food in supermarkets such as Carrefour.
I don't think it's a marketing stunt because the organic market is very much in demand so supermarkets have to respond to this demand. Everybody does marketing: supermarkets, retailers, but I don't think it's a marketing stunt for large retailors- I really think there's an awareness that we need to eat better and avoid junk food.
