In addition, in recent years, online travel and non-standard accommodations have become more and more popular, such as Airbnb, Booking and Expédia. These convenient ways of consumption are further promoting the development of the tourism industry.

What is the tourist market?

A tourist market consists of buyers and sellers. The buyers are the people who visit to a place just aim to see and experience them. They would like to buy tour packages, transportation, hotel or other lodgings, restaurant food, souvenirs, travel insurance and luggage, etc. In other words, buyers are the origin and the cause of tourism products and the related service.  Sellers offer different kinds of products and services that can be adjusted to different needs and reasons for purchase by buyers, so it is necessary to recognize clearly the differentiated segments or groups.

What can the tourist market bring for a region?

The development of a country’s or region's tourism industry can improve the comprehensive strength of a country or a region. On one side, in recent years, many developing countries have committed to developing their tourism industries, because in many countries, tourism is the largest foreign-exchange market currently available, drive and promote the regional economic development. On the other side, the development of tourist market can create more revenue and employment opportunities. For many regions and countries, this is the most important source of benefits, for instance, the country like Thailand or some small city in China. Therefore, the ability of the national economy benefits from the tourism depends on the ability to invest on the construction and development of the necessary infrastructure and the ability to satisfy visitors' needs.

However, the rapid development of the tourism industry can also cause problems for the locals, such as environmental pollution and damage to property. In this case, the joint efforts of the government and the enterprises who engaged in the tourism industry become necessary. They need to strengthen the protection of the environment and take measures to repairs to property. At the same time, it must promote civilization travel to locals.

The trend of the international tourism market

According to the statistic, because of online travel and non-standard accommodation, the consumption patterns in tourism have been changed. In a short time, travel will be people’s first choice for the entertainment of people during the holidays. In particular, regional tourism will take the dominate position. Since the language and culture gap of neighboring areas is not significant, also due to the increasing working pressure and the time constraints, people are more willing to visit to more places to learn more about the culture in one-time. For example, when people visit Europe, they like to travel to neighboring countries such as, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, etc. Further more, thanks to the development of information networks, young people are becoming more and more like “free walkers”. That is to say, they prefer planning travel routes themselves rather than travel with a tour group. According to the 2016 survey, consumers are more incline to choose countries which with developed tourism system and comfortable consumption environment, such as Bangkok, Dubai, France, the United Kingdom and others, as the ideal tourist destination. From the above analysis we can see that, in recent years, leisure tourism will become a focus of attention the tourism market, and leading the tourism industry to a new level.

  1. Hi Xuedan,

Thanks for this article with rich content and interesting points of view! I particularly like the two last parts in which you point out the environmental problem that tourism could cause and analyse the market trend. I personally like traveling alone or with one friend, it’s a much better way for me to experience the local culture than traveling with a group. I went to Cambodia last year and saw many historical relics such as statues and paintings just exposed to the sunshine and the rain, without any protection. I think the local government really needs to do more to protect those relics.

There’s one thing I didn’t understand in your article: what do you mean by “promoting civilization travels to local”?

Yes, I totally agree with you. I prefer travel without tour group either. For the sentence, I would like to express that the Government should promote civilized travel to its own residents. To remind them to improve their own quality, and be a civilized tourists when they travel to other areas.

  2. Hi Xuedan,

Thanks for sharing your article! It's interesting reading it! As you mentioned, the travel industry is indeed becoming more and more popular in today’s society. People nowadays are quite willing to go outside, experience new things and broaden their horizons. Definitely this increasingly social trend will contribute to the economy growth. However, at the same time, there might be a potential danger: in order to gain profit, will the local culture lose its own identity while meeting the needs of the tourist market? What do you think about it?

    1. Hi Bei !
I have seriously considered about your question, I think a lot of tourist destinations have become very commercial, lost its original charm, such as some of China's scenic spots, and the paintings in Louvre. Many people just come here, take pictures and left, they will not go to the deep sense of it. I think this is what government needs to do for improvement in the tourism industry, reducing the commercial activities of scenic spots , restore his most original charm. At the same time, tourists own quality improvement is also very necessary.

  3. Hi Xuedan !

I share your opinion, people are increasingly stressed ! This is why they enjoy taking a vacation. But tourism also pollutes. I think that eco-tourism is a good solution to overcome this problem. Do you know what is eco-tourism ?
