Tattoos from aesthetics to medicals reasons

A symbol of rebellion at first, tattoos are evolving from ink design to medical procedure.

Getting a tattoo to demonstrate a certain affiliation with a group or for aesthetic reasons is no longer trendy. Nowadays tattooists and doctors are doing tattoos for medical reasons and are involved in helping people to overcome medical troubles that are affecting their looks.
As a result of the growth of this industry, dermal pigmentation, which is the medical term used to define tattoos, is more and more used by doctors, by some tattooists which are specializing in medical tattoos or by people becoming tattooists with the aim of doing medical tattoos.

Vinnie Mayers

Vinnie Mayers is a concrete example of the new medical aspects of the tattoo industry. At first he was an army medical he became a tattooist and then a tattooist specialized in nipple tattoos. Nipple Areola Tattooing has the aim to help breast cancer patients in their recovery process after a mastectomy. Vinnie Mayers is actually working in collaboration with the Center of Restorative Breast Surgery in New Orleans.

The reason that encourages him to do this activity is very relevant. He explains it by putting himself in a breast cancer patient's place: “You get up every day, you look in the mirror, and you don’t have any nipples. The perfectly reconstructed breast is still not a breast [until it has] a nipple. It is the finishing touch. It makes them feel whole again.”. Medicals agree to say that nipple reconstruction is extremely helpful for the emotional healing of patients. A medical of the Center defines Mr. Mayers as the Da Vinci of nipple tattoos. Thanks to his talent, breast cancer patients are grateful to Mr. Mayers because he gave them the opportunity to feel better.

Basma Hameed

Basma Hameed before and after dermal pigmentation
Basma Hameed has been the victim of a terrible childhood accident that left her with terrible face scars. Medicals agreed that surgeries could not help her any longer and because of this she had to stop wasting money.

At this point, this situation has entertained the idea that the micro pigment implantation was her last chance: “If we can do tattoos for eyebrows, eyeliner and lips, why not use the same technique and mix pigments that match your skin and tattoo into the scar?” Basma Hameed stated. That is why Mrs Hameed taught herself and started to tattoo her own face. The result was surprising and she liked it so much that the idea to help people was born.

The young woman has set up the Basma Hameed Clinic. Her activity is growing and is developing day after day the use of dermal pigmentation. Today, she is able to clear up birthmarks, vitiligo, and scars from burns, surgeries and acne. It seems that it was not enough because the young tattooist is also providing hair transplant to repair mastectomy. Her story inspired many people and gave some hope to people living the same story that she did.

Burak Danişmend

The idea of this 18-year-old tattooist from Smirni in Turkey is original and very different. His aim is to help people with mental disorders and Alzheimer’s patients thanks to an activity concluded free of charge. He wants to help them to be recognizable by tattooing their name on their body. Those tattoos are not done to overcome a physical trouble but to help patients in their everyday life.

Medical tattoos are offering people a new look that they are proud of and a help in their everyday life. Due to their very high price, the use of tattoos for medical reasons is limited but we can hope that one day governments will treat tattoos as surgeries, which means help people to have access to these tattoos.

If someone has told you that tattoos could help you to feel better, would you have believed him?

  1. I wasn't aware of this use of tattoos. I'm positively surprised.
Without knowing all those stories, I would not have believed someone telling me that tattoos could make me feel better. However it is a great idea, I'm not sure I would be ready to get a tattoo even for medical reason. I'm afraid of surgery in general but even more of getting a tattoo. Tattoos still seem something durty and unhealthy to me.

And you, If someone has told you that tattoos could help you to feel better, would you have believed him?

    1. I understand your point of view. However, my opinion about tattoos is very different. I am tattooed and for me my tattoos are covering up the scars of my past. That is to say, that in my opinion tattoos have always helped people to feel better by expressing what they have been through in their past. Now there are using this technology to help people who cannot overcome their current look and I think this is great.

  2. Hi Kevin,

    What an interesting article!
As Anne-Sophie, I did not know that tattoos could help some people to feel better. To me, plastic surgery was the only solution to reduce scars or other physical problems. Today, I understand that tattoos are not only a trend but they can allow some people to feel more comfortable in their own body. I find that it is a great technological advance, very useful.

    1. Hi Nadège,

I also think that this technology is great because sometimes surgeries cannot help people as in the case of Basma Hameed.
In addition, I hope that thanks to the development of this technology, tattoos will be more accepted by people in the society.
