CREATORS
OF iPANTS ORDERED TO PAY $1.5 MILLION PENALTIES BY THE FTC
First, the
iPant has no relation with iPod, iPad etc. and has nothing to do with
Apple.
However, the
use of the name itself “iPant” was not chosen by accident.
An “i-”
product makes people directly think about a high-tech product, which
is really well calculated to bring this image without saying it, just
with the idea commonly associated with an “i-” product.
The
iPant (see
the picture on the left)
is underwear for women created by Norm
Thompson Outfiters and Wacoal
America.

EVERYONE
WANTS TO BE BEAUTIFUL: HOW EXPLOITING DREAM CAN BE A STRONG WEAPON TO
TRAP CONSUMERS
Everyone
would like to be more beautiful, to lose weight here and there to
make a better impression on others, to be more attractive. This is
the dream of nearly everyone. A real opportunity for a businessman.
A
well-thought way to convince and trick consumers
With no
effort, just by wearing the iPant, revolutionnary caffeine-infused
underwear, this dream could become reality. The iPant will make you
lose weight and improve your skin's appearance. Then, thanks to its
microcapsules of caffeine continuously diffused in your body, the
iPant will also activate microcirculation providing you a permanent
anti-cellulite effect. If you want to improve your body, become more
beautiful, why won't you buy it?
Thanks
to their different marketing campaigns and ads, Norm
Thompson Outfiters and Wacoal
America managed to convince consumers
the iPant was perfect for every woman and especially made for all who
would like to get in shape.
Concerning the beauty business, playing on consumers' emotions is a
strong weapon to catch them and make them buy a brand new
perfectly-made-for-you product.
In today's
more and more individualistic society, appearance is one of the most
important ways to become someone, to be accepted, seen and really
integrated by others. Consequently, as almost everyone is really
taking care of his appearance, it is often plain simple to convince
consumers to make them more beautiful just by buying a product.
HOW
NAIVE CONSUMERS ARE TRICKED BY MANIPULATIVE SELLERS
The core
problem in the beauty business is that naive people are easily
convinced and tricked by companies wanting to make a profit.
However, to
sell any product whatsoever, it is forbidden to tell lies about the
effectiveness or result of the product. When a product is supposed to
make consumers lose weight, make their skin tougher, make their
cellulite disappear and so on, proofs have to be found before saying
it in ads. Without scientific proof, saying the product works is seen
as a lie and causes severe problems to the one who said it to
convince and sell his product.
Norm
Thompson Outfiters and Wacoal
America used this strategy to convince
consumers to buy their iPants.
Unfortunately
for them, some consumers who bought the iPant and used it didn't see
the effects of it on their body.
It was
at this point that Norm Thompson
Outfiters and Wacoal
America's nightmare has begun.
HOW
THEIR LIE LED TO $1.5 MILLION PENALTIES
The FTC
ordered them to pay $1.5 million penalties because of the two
conmen's lie.
Wacoal
managed to scientifically prove the effectiveness of the iPant by
some tests.
However, as
Jessica Rich said, director of FTCs' bureau of consumer protection,
the clinical studies had “serious methodological flaws” as many
users didn't see the effects either, which extremely angered them.
Saying a
product works with proof is right but saying it works without proof
is a lie. That's why companies always stay on the line by not
affirming things but by making consumers guess.
Consumers
bought the iPant in order to benefit from all the characteristics
described above but nothing happened after using it, which makes Norm
Thompson Outfiters and Wacoal
America appear as conmen and their
iPant as a trick which made them pay for their lie.

Oops... I bought one. But hopefully I can resell it on internet. I am both a naive consumer and a manipulative seller. All joking aside, I have a question: Have they earned more than $1,5 million with this scam? So that they would have make profit even though...

Unfortunately I didn't found any information to answer you. However, I think that when that kind of product is launched, thanks to its attractivness, profit made are bigger than penalties, even in that case with the $1.5 million penaltie.
DeleteHi Sam !
ReplyDeleteA good article and particularly the example of product, which efficiently manipulate consumers.
Actually, today there are so many tricky product that are supposed to help people lose weight. Women ( especially ) are very sensitive to such products.
They are ready to spend as much money as it takes to satisfy their desire to lose weight. And as you said in your article companies make profit of it desire.
However, I think, that the majority of that kind of product are efficient. Not because of their specific “power” , but because women who purchase it have the feith. Buying the product help them to become more self-confident and it have a positive effect on their psychology and so on their body.
So, yes I agree that is bad to trap consumers, but maybe sometimes it’s not so bad as we think..
So Leo, don't rush to resell it, if you believe in your product, I am sure that it will help you to reach your goal!

Thank you Evguenia.
DeleteI think you're taling about the "Placebo effect". When someone is convinced the product works even if there is no proof for it.
I don't say if must not buy this kind of product, if it would be the case, this kind of product wouldn't exist at all. No, buying this product can make people fell better and if it's the case even with no proof of any effectiveness, it is good to buy it.
Too late Evguenia, I have already sold it to my mother, business is business.

I hope your mother will like it Leo !! ;)
DeleteShe is crazy about it, but it does not have any effect so far.
