Deforestation : Mattel has been accused by Greenpeace!

Last June, Greenpeace started a campaign revealing that Mattel (leader in the world industry of toy) and its famous doll: “Barbie”,  were involved in the Indonesian deforestation.

The reason is that Mattel stocks up at Asia Pulp and Paper ( APP), a paper company  accused of damaging the Indonesian natural landscape: its boxes which pack the famous Barbie, are making by a mixture of tropical wood resulting from the Indonesian deforestation. Worse still, the company destroys  the natural shelters which protect the last tigers and orangutans of Sumatra.

Greenpeace has launched a global campaign with a very original method: a video was broadcasted and showed Ken’s choice to leave Barbie further to its participation in deforestation. The goal is here to make sensitive parents and children on the ecology issue and the protection of  the natural shelters. The video knew a worldwide success. In France, for instance, it has been viewed 290,000 times.

The fight was won because Mattel finally, decided to follow Greenpeace's recommendations and to stop stocking up at Asia Pup and Paper. Besides, the company recognized that the products used for packaging, stemming from deforestation and  could not be integrated into its production line. This decision had a positive impact because it was a real message dedicated to all toy companies in the world. Furthermore, it allowed to reduce the invasion of APP, which loose one of its biggest customer.

However, despite the criticisms made by Greenpeace, APP remains insensible. That’s why the environmental organization decided to go to Indonesia in order to conduct a survey on the damages caused.

Deforestation should not be a business because it consists in a real environmental crime! Environmental problems concerns everybody, as much companies as citizens.

You too, act, make your voice heard, support this movement towards a world more environmentally friendly because only your commitment can change the situation. You are the future! Get involved!

  2. I'm not really concerned with Barbies' boxes, however the problem you are talking about bothers me all the same. Packaging is an important part of the marketing, the box is part of the product. But would it be possible to sell barbies without boxes? No, or so much less. Well, thanks to Green Peace, Indonesian forests could be saved, but that is another one which will be destroyed. The problem is that the world is too industrialized now. As long as we will use cardboard boxes, we could not be able to stop the deforestation...
